This Saturday will see the pay-per-view box office record smashed when more than 4.6 million people are expected to purchase the Conor McGregor versus Floyd Mayweather Jr fight worldwide.
Mayweather currently holds the box office record at 4.6 million for his victory over Manny Pacquiao in May 2015 – nearly twice as many as the previous record, when he fought Oscar De La Hoya.
Conor McGregor has been a popular attraction himself in the UFC where his rematch with Nate Diaz last August broke their buy-rate record at 1.65 million.
Saturday’s fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA has got the attention of every sporting fan worldwide – it’s going to be huge! And, although the bookmakers have the Mayweather v McGregor fixed odds heavily in favour of the American, these three knockouts from the UFC show that Mayweather cannot afford to underestimate the Notorious Irishman:
- José Aldo
Conor McGregor stepped into the ring with José Aldo on the 12th December, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Brazilian was the UFC Featherweight Champion and undefeated in more than 10 years.
This was the main event for UFC 194 and it lasted only 13 seconds as Conor McGregor scored with a left hook as Aldo was advancing towards him, knocking the Brazilian down to the floor and out.
McGregor was awarded the Performance of the Night for ending José Aldo’s streak.
- Paddy Doherty
Conor McGregor was still fighting in the Republic of Ireland when he took on Paddy Doherty at the Immortal Fighting Championship 4 on 16th April, 2011. This was only his ninth fight and it lasted only four seconds.
Straight from the bell McGregor landed a hard left shot that knocked out his opponent to score one of the quickest victories in MMA history.
- Steve O’Keefe
Little more than a year before he would enter the UFC cage, Conor McGregor was fighting Steve O’Keefe at Cage Warriors 45 in London, England.
His opponent was attempting a chokehold from a standing position early in the first round before McGregor fought it off and managed to knockout his opponent with a couple of elbow strikes in defence.
