Each week, I will use this space to tell you what I think are a few of the best bets heading into the weekend. I will also throw in an upset of the week, which will be a team that is at least a touchdown underdog that I am picking to win outright.
Week 3 Picks
Ohio State at Oklahoma (+1.5): Two great teams are playing in what could still be a College Football Playoff preview, despite neither of these teams being in my projected field at the moment. There is no question that the Sooners need this game more. It is unlikely that Oklahoma will make the CFP with two losses. Ohio State won’t make it easy, but it’s an even match up where the home team needs it more. Pick: Oklahoma +1.5
Duke at Northwestern (Under 44.5): Duke only mustered 14 points against Wake Forest at home last week. Northwestern scored just 7 at home against Illinois State. Illinois State! The Wildcats have just 28 total points in two games. Twenty-eight isn’t a good enough score on the ACT to get you into Northwestern, and it’s not good enough for two games of football. Pick: Under
Navy at Tulane (+5.5): Navy gave me a push last week in a subpar performance against UConn. I expect the Middies to step it up this week in New Orleans against a rebuilding Tulane team. The Green Wave struggled to score against Wake Forest in the opener, but did hold the Demon Deacons down. Navy’s offense is tougher to stop. Pick: Navy -5.5
Upset of the Week
Michigan State at Notre Dame (-7.5): This line jumped off the page at me. I know the Spartans struggled in week one, but that was week one. This is the defending Big Ten champion, and a team some think can repeat. The Irish have settled on DeShone Kizer at QB. No question he makes the Irish better. If Michigan State could win at Ohio State with a backup quarterback last year, they can certainly win in South Bend this year. Pick: Michigan State (+7.5)
