Live round-by-round coverage will begin with a matchup between Drew Dober and Jason Gonzalez. In the main event of the FOX Sports 1 portion of the preliminary card, Jessica Eye and Bethe Correia will meet after a heated weigh-in just a day ago.
Fans across the globe can tune into the night’s pay-per-view portion of the card which kicks off at 10 PM ET. The main card will begin with a showdown in the women’s strawweight division. Urijah Faber will also continue his historical career when he meets up-and-coming prospect in Jimmie Rivera.
The long awaited debut of CM Punk, WWE superstar crossover, will finally take place when he meets Mickey Gall in the third bout of the PPV card. Following Punk’s Octagon appearance, former heavyweight kingpin, Fabricio Werdum will look to get back in the win column when he meets Travis Browne for the second time in his career. Werdum defeated Browne in dominant fashion in April 2014.
In the evening’s main event, Stipe Miocic will seek to defend his title in front of his home crowd. Miocic’s task won’t come easy, however, as Alistair Overeem looks to finally capture UFC gold.
Main Card Summary
Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem
Round 1: After a memorable introduction, the two take the center of the Octagon and begin the feeling out process. Miocic lands first with a series of strikes. Overeat drops Miocic and jumps on the Guillotine. Miocic escapes and returns to his feet. What a wild 30 seconds of action. Miocic lands a huge right and has Overeem up against the cage and is teeing off on him. Overeem is moving away and recovers. Still two minutes left in the round. Overeem lands an overhand flush and now Miocic is putting on the pressure. Miocic gets Overeem down and is landing bombs. The referee stops the fight and Cleveland goes wild. What a performance by Miocic.
Result: Miocic defeats Overeem via TKO, Round 1, 4:27
Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne
Round 1: Werdum charges the center of the Octagon and connects on a front kick. Another crazy kick from Werdum just misses as the crowed erupts. Action pauses briefly and now we’re back at it. Browne appears to have hurt his hand. Werdum gets tripped up and lands on his back. Browne lets him back up. Werdum connects with a straight shot and is landing down strikes. He gets Browne’s back and is looking to sink in the choke with just seconds remaining in the round. Browne survives.
Round 2: Werdum shoots for the takedown but Browne escapes. Werdum ends up on his back but the referee stands him back up. Browne wants no parts of Werdum on the ground. Overhand right lands from Werdum. Browne doesn’t appear to be himself, standing flat-footed. A lot less action this round as the fans let them know about it. Werdum continues with the body kicks. Browne connects on a body shot but stops moving forward. Just a minute remaining in the round. Werdum attempts another wild kick as the round comes to a close.
Round 3: Both guys look to be running on ‘E’. Fans are still letting them know about it. Werdum lands a leg kick with minimal power. Werdum goes for the single leg, but fails miserably. Half way through the final round of this lackluster fight. Werdum lands a combo, but is too tired to continue. Browne lands a headlock with 90 seconds remaining in the bout. Werdum attempts a leg sweep with a minute remaining, but again, fails. With 30 seconds remaining, the fans let out a roar of discontentment. Werdum lands a body kick to end the fight.
Result: Werdum def. Browne via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-27, 30-27)
CM Punk vs. Mickey Gall
Round 1: Gall takes Punk down early. Punk struggling from the bottom and Gall is landing shots. Gall takes his back and is looking for the submission. Punk hanging tough, but needs to get back to his feet. Gall keeps him down and submits him in a matter of two minutes.
Result: Gall def. Punk via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke), Round 1, 2:14
Urijah Faber vs. Jimmie Rivera
Round 1: Faber and Rivera feel each other out early. Faber shoots for an early takedown, but it’s easily stuffed by Rivera. Faber has to respect Rivera’s power as he backs up. By the early looks of it, it doesn’t appear as if Faber is going to get Rivera to the ground. Great takedown defense from Rivera early on. Rivera lands a left, but Faber continues to come forward. Rivera mixing it up with leg kicks, but again, Faber continues forward. Not a ton of first round action.
Round 2: Faber misses on a high kick to start the second round. Rivera takes a shot below the belt and action pauses. Action continues. Fans are getting a little uneasy as we’re approaching the three minute mark of the round. Faber can’t seem to find his groove, but Rivera isn’t capitalizing on the opportunity. Rivera snaps a leg kick, but Faber is right back up. Rivera sticking to the game plan, and picking his strikes. Not a lot going on with a minute remaining. Rivera takes the round with leg kicks and the crowd isn’t pleased.
Round 3: Faber comes out swinging but is having trouble establishing a rhythm. Faber shoots for a takedown, but it’s stuffed. Three and a half minutes remaining in the fight. Vicious leg kick from Rivera. Faber’s leg is extremely tender. Rivera gets poked in the eye and action stops. They’re back in the center of the Octagon with three minutes left. Rivera lands a flurry of strikes. Faber is running out of time and isn’t showing a sense of urgency. Faber just has nothing to offer, now just a minute remaining. Another Rivera leg kick and the crowd continues to be unsatisfied.
Result: Rivera def. Faber via Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x)
Jessica Andrade vs. Joanne Calderwood
Round 1: Calderwood and Andrade exchange early in the center of the Octagon. Andrade shoots for the takedown, but it’s stuffed by Calderwood. Andrade finally gets the takedown and has Calderwood pinned against the cage. Calderwood gets back to her feet quickly. Back to the canvas she goes, and now Andrade is working from top position. Calderwood trying to stay active from her back, but Calderwood slams her back to the ground. Andrade moves to side control, but Calderwood is showing her ability to defend. Andrade starting to let some ground-and-pound fly and continues with body shots. Calderwood sinks in the guillotine and Calderwood taps. What a performance for Andrade.
