A sold out crowd packed the Quickens Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, for Saturday night’s UFC 203: Miocic vs. Overeem, which aired live on pay per view.

The heavyweight title main event saw Ohio-native and hometown hero Stipe Miocic attempt his first title defense against world class kickboxer and former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem. Miocic won the belt with a vicious KO of Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 in May, while Overeem had previously pieced together an impressive 4-fight win streak to earn his first shot at UFC gold.

In the co-main event, former champion Fabricio Werdum made his first octagon appearance since the Miocic loss, taking on Hawaiian-born Travis “Hapa” Browne. The rematch of their UFC on FOX 11 fight, which Werdum won via unanimous decision, came together when Browne stepped in for an injured Ben Rothwell on short notice. “Hapa” was also looking to get back into the win column after a devastating head-kick KO loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 200.

Before the heavyweights tested the structural integrity of the octagon on Saturday night, former professional wrestler and WWE superstar Phil “CM Punk” Brooks made his much anticipated — and, if we’re being completely honest, controversial — mixed martial arts debut against sophomore UFC fighter Mickey Gall.

“Punk” famously announced his signing with the UFC during an interview segment with commentator Joe Rogan at UFC 181 back in December 2014. Shortly after the announcement, “Punk” relocated to Milwaukee to train at the highly regarded Roufusport gym under the tutelage of respected kickboxer and MMA trainer Jeff “Duke” Roufus — as was documented on the FOX Sports 1 series “The Evolution of Punk”, which aired in the weeks leading up to his pay per view debut.

Although also relatively inexperienced, Mickey Gall had won two previous professional MMA bouts prior to stepping into the cage with “Punk” at UFC 203.
